Can Travertine floor tiles be polished up to give them a shine
and if so what do l need to do it?
Hi - Travertine tiles are porous & should be sealed with a
proper sealer to prevent them getting stained/dirty & to make them easier
to clean. They could require up to 5 coats to seal them properly. You
can get a sealer that will give them a shiny finish. The sealer is very
potent stuff to apply & plenty of ventilation is required. Also wear
rubber gloves.
Apply the sealer, with a brush or roller, covering about 2 square metres at a time. Leave it a few minutes & then wipe off the excess with a lint free rag. Treat the whole floor like this. Leave overnight to dry. Repeat this process until sufficent sealer has been applied to properly seal the tiles (and grout). You will know when sufficient coats have been applied by dripping a few drops of water onto the dry tiles. When you blow the drops of water they should 'roll' across the surface of the tile. You can get the sealer from tile shops & is manufactured by PG.
yes, first you have to strip what on there ,clean and then
wax.the best machine you can use is a floor polisher.you can rent one. to
steer it just lift up and down on the Handel.you will need chemical to
strip,clean and wax.
Don't know what a travertine tile is, but most flooring tiles
can be given a high gloss, non slip shine by using metalised floor polish.
It comes in various different names, but the bottle should say emulsion
polish on it. Two ways to identify it, (i usually use johnstons), a.) i
open in in the shop, it should look like milk. b.) read instructions.
The method is like this: Clean water in a bucket. Clean damp cloth. Poor
little amount of polish on floor & wipe in one direction. Apply second coat when dry, usually 20 mins later, by wiping in opposite direction. Finally a third coat. When complete the effort is really worthwhile & lasts for months. For home use, you can apply a new coat occasionally. Or repeat the process after 3 months, removing the old coating with ammonia & warm water.
